Revelation 3:7 (ESV)
κλείωkleiō · Greek

THE WORD BENEATH THE TURNLexical gloss: to shut or close (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, kleiō). In Revelation 3:7 this language concerns Christ’s authority; identifying a personal obstacle as His directive requires further discernment.

Added the Philadelphia setting and key-of-David connection, labeled personal-direction application as analogy, and added discernment before interpreting setbacks.

About editions and corrections →
“An unexplained setback calls for discernment; it does not give us permission to invent God’s explanation.”
— Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.

Revelation 3:7–13 addresses the church in Philadelphia. Christ’s key of David recalls the royal authority pictured in Isaiah 22:22. Verse 8 promises an open door to a church with little power that has kept His word. The image establishes Christ’s authority; it is not a formula for interpreting every personal setback.

Readers understand the open door in relation to entrance into God’s kingdom, opportunity for witness, or both. Whatever distinction is made, the passage reassures a faithful church under opposition. Applying its door imagery to an unsuccessful plan is a contemporary analogy, not a direct identification supplied by the verse.

Before treating an obstacle as a command to leave, examine Scripture, your responsibilities, the available facts, and wise counsel. Consider whether the difficulty calls for perseverance, correction, protection, or a changed plan. Opposition can accompany faithful work; a setback alone does not establish divine prohibition.

You may trust Christ without pretending to know why an opportunity ended. Where obedience is clear, act faithfully. Where direction remains uncertain, pray, seek counsel, and refrain from assigning God an explanation He has not given.
