When Was the Last Time the Truth Changed Your Mind?

Published · Bishop W. F. Houston Jr.

We often measure a message by how strongly it confirms what we already believe. But agreement alone is a poor measure of spiritual growth.

Sometimes growth begins with an uncomfortable sentence:

“I have defended this for years—and I may be wrong.”

You can be sincere and still need correction. You can quote Scripture accurately and still apply it unfairly. You can win an argument while refusing the very humility you are asking someone else to practice.

Before your next disagreement, ask yourself:

“What would I be willing to examine if protecting my reputation were no longer my first concern?”

A teachable spirit does more than welcome truth when it arrives as encouragement. It makes room when truth arrives as correction.
