THE DEVOTION

Beloved,

Sunday’s message can move us deeply. Monday reveals what we have allowed it to change.

We can admire a teaching on forgiveness while rehearsing someone’s offense. We can celebrate humility while refusing correction. We can explain generosity beautifully while remaining unavailable to another person’s need.

The danger is subtle: familiarity with truth can begin to feel like faithfulness to truth.

Jesus confronts that confusion in Luke 6:46–49. His question exposes the distance between calling Him Lord and submitting to His instruction. He then describes two builders. Both hear. The decisive difference is what they do with what they hear.

The Greek verb ποιέω (poieō) means “to do” or “to make.” In Luke 6:47, its form ποιῶν (poiōn) describes doing Jesus’ words—putting His instruction into practice. The emphasis is concrete obedience.

The faithful builder digs deeply. That image should trouble our appetite for spiritual shortcuts. Foundations require work beneath the surface, where appearance offers no substitute for substance.

For us, that may mean examining the excuse beneath our anger, the pride beneath our silence, or the fear beneath our need to control.

Obedience does not purchase grace. It expresses our response to the Lord whose grace we have received. When we discover inconsistency, we can bring it honestly to Him, repent, and take the next faithful step.

And faithful people still encounter storms. In Jesus’ illustration, the flood reaches the well-built house too. The foundation matters when pressure arrives.

Before this Monday becomes crowded, name one instruction of Christ that you already understand and have delayed practicing.

Make the apology. Tell the truth. Keep the promise. Offer the kindness that pride keeps postponing.

What will your next choice reveal about the Lord you confess?

Study the evidence

Read the surrounding argument before drawing an application. Scripture links open in a new tab.

Practice interpreting before teaching
  1. Observe: identify the speaker, audience, situation, and two statements the passage makes explicitly.
  2. Interpret: state the conclusion in your own words and explain which details support it. Mark any inference.
  3. Compare: give a reasonable alternative reading fairly. Explain why the context supports or weakens it.
  4. Apply: propose one present-day response. Identify what the passage does not promise and whose circumstances require care.
  5. Revise: check the title, illustration, prayer, and assignment against the same evidence. Change any statement that exceeds it.

A strong response names evidence, handles an objection fairly, and distinguishes application from the passage’s direct statement. Agreement with a teacher alone is not a demonstration of understanding.

Prayer

Father, expose the places where our words outrun our willingness. Forgive our selective obedience. Deepen our trust in Christ, soften our resistance, and strengthen us to practice what You have made clear. Let today’s choices bear witness to Your transforming grace.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY!

BENEDICTION

May the grace of Christ sustain you, and may His words shape your steps throughout this week.

Give the Word room to work.
