“The credit card didn’t eliminate the loan company; it placed the loan officer in your wallet and taught debt to look like purchasing power.”

The Loan Officer in Your Wallet

This is for everyone thinking about getting that credit card—and for those of us who already have one.

Beloved, a credit card is essentially a loan company reduced to pocket size. Every swipe draws on borrowed money—approved instantly, without the psychological weight of sitting across from a loan officer and signing loan papers.

The difference is subtle, but dangerous. A traditional loan reminds you that you are borrowing. A credit card can make borrowing feel like buying. Friends, the lender’s office has been replaced by a piece of plastic, and the loan officer has been replaced by a credit limit.

The real innovation of the credit card was not merely lending money—it was making repeated borrowing feel ordinary.
